Thought Enthusiast Live: Pitchfork Year in Music Mixtape 2024
💭 Pitchfork writers and editors helped us end the year with a bang.
Last week, we launched our first-ever NYC Thought Enthusiast live panel event with our friends at renowned music publication Pitchfork – but before we get into recapping the details, we just wanted to say how incredibly grateful we are for all of the amazing partners, sponsors, and friends we’ve been able to collaborate with in 2024. :’)
Last Wednesday’s Thought Enthusiast panel event saw Pitchfork writers and critics, along with folks from across the music industry, gather at AdHoc’s loft space in Chinatown for the Year in Music Mixtape, a series of conversations and games about all that went down in 2024.
Deputy Director Jeremy D. Larson hosted, and Pitchfork’s head of editorial content, Mano Sundaresan, interviewed Alphonse Pierre about the year in rap, Arielle Gordon about the year in Brat, and Jael Holzman talked about her band Ekko Astral and their lauded debut album, Pink Balloons.
The panelists also played games with the audience, such as “Is It Brat?” and “Is This a Real Mixtape Title?” Alphonse awarded the winners prizes from his personal stash of rap ephemera—the best might have been a DVD of Mr. 305: The Pitbull Story, and Arielle awarded the winner of “Is It Brat?” with… you guessed it, a vinyl copy of BRAT.
And, to close things out, Jeremy gathered all of the panelists on stage for a game inspired by “101 Things That Happened in 2024, Ranked on the Pitchfork Scale” complete with dry erase boards which housed each panelist’s score.
The Year in Music series was capped off the following night with Pitchfork’s 2024 Year in Music Club Night, which the team here at AdHoc helped organize, produce, and present.
With DJ sets from Pitchfork’s Mano Sundaresan and Alphonse Pierre, New York multi-hyphenate Anysia Kym, Chicago footwork pioneer RP Boo, Houston remixer DJ Ess, and junglists Dazegxd and Intimacy Simulator, the night captured the eclectic, genre-bending nature of dance music in 2024. Plus, pop duo NEW YORK gave a captivating live performance on the dancefloor.
Special thanks to our sponsors Monopolio, Topo Chico, Visitor, and Good Spirits. As well as photographer Sam Wachs who was there to capture the magic of both nights.
