Kim Robinson Jr., 3pts
💭 Investing in niche communities, Brooklyn jazz clubs, and The Creative Habit.
Thought Enthusiast is an AdHoc Project where we chat with fascinating thought leaders across various facets of music, tech, and culture whose work we admire, simply asking “what’s on your mind?” and “why do you care?” 💭
Forever a culture kid and media obsessive, Kim Robinson Jr. is the founder of 3pts, a platform that empowers creative entrepreneurs to run and grow a successful business. Originally hailing from Baltimore, Sacramento, and Hawaii, and currently residing in Brooklyn, Kim has previously held culture marketing leadership roles at Red Bull, Complex, The FADER and a billion agencies. We were craving some words of wisdom and asked Kim about what’s on his mind today.
🤝 Creativity meets business
I’m focused on bridging the gap between creativity and business practice for artists, designers, artisans and craftspeople via my business 3pts.
🍽 High reward recipes
I love music and culture so much, but these days I'm always asking the question "What am I going to eat next?" It's always on my mind. I live in the NYT cooking app where I'm always scheming what dishes I'll be making next. For 6 years straight my partner and I have never repeated a dinner (except when they were leftovers). I'm currently cooking my way through Ali Slagle's book I Dream of Dinner (So You Don't Have To). The recipes are low intensity but high reward.
🕉 Mantra of the moment
"Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I will understand."
Twyla Tharp, whose book The Creative Habit, continues to inspire me as I always come back to it. I'm super into systems thinking to accomplish hard but worthwhile things and not killing yourself in the midst of it all. Her work is living testimony of how systems thinking allows for creativity to produce amazing things that moves the culture forward. It's what I hope to do one day.
🎷 Brooklyn jazz clubs
I'm looking forward to taking my wife to the Bushwick jazz club Ornithology at some point later this month. Get there early!
🎧 Music From Memory
I pay attention to media and music brands more than anything [...] I feel that the label Music From Memory has been the best underground label for the last 5 years and counting. If it has MFM on it, I'm checking it out.
🔗 Investing in niche community strategies
I feel like the people who are doing great things in all of the industries I'm paying attention to are truly investing in a niche community strategy that connects people online and offline.
